HADLEY, Mass. - After posting five first-place finishes on Friday and Saturday for the No. 14-ranked Williams College men's swimming & diving team, senior captain
Oliver Schalet was named NESCAC Performer of the Week by the conference office Tuesday.
"It is always fun to race top competition and it was great to see the team step up to the challenge," said Schalet. "I was proud of my grit and ability to race last weekend. I had a lot of fun competing, especially as we celebrated the senior class. It is nice to be named NESCAC Performer of the Week, especially alongside
Sophia Verkleeren, and is a testament to our teammates and coaches who push us to be better every day."
During a 199-99 victory over Connecticut College Saturday afternoon at Samuelson-Muir Pool in Williamstown, Massachusetts, Schalet finished first overall individually in the finals of the 100-yard breaststroke (56.87) and 200 breaststroke (2:06.99). He also teamed up with his relay unit to record a first-place finish during the finals of the 200 freestyle (1:24.09), with a personal time of 20:52 on the third leg.
The Northampton, Massachusetts, native tallied a pair of first-place nods against No. 1 NYU and No. 6 MIT Friday afternoon at Samuelson-Muir Pool, as he was the first swimmer to touch the wall in the finals of the 100 (45.95) and 200 freestyle (1:41.11). Schalet was a pivotal factor behind the Ephs' runner-up finish in the finals of the 400 medley relay (3:25.45), as he clocked a time of 45.25 in the final position. Williams defeated MIT, 200-94.
"During the course of the two meets last weekend, Oliver consistently showed his racing tenacity and grit, winning close race after close race," said head coach
Steve Kuster. "He did all of it while nursing a bad ankle, but you never would know. He truly loves racing, swimming and this team."
Schalet was recognized with College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-American Second Team laurels in 2024. Along with his team, Schalet placed first overall in the finals of the 800Â freestyle relay (6:29.05) at the 2024 NCAA Division III Championship.
During the 2024 conference championship, he placed first overall in three team-oriented relay events and two individual events. In all five events, the times were good for overall NESCAC records and NESCAC meet records, as he accomplished the feat in the 200 individual medley (1:46.63), 400 IM (3:51.87), 200 freestyle relay (1:19.59), 400 medley relay (3:12.28) and 800 freestyle relay (6:29.14).
The Ephs will be back in action Saturday at 1 p.m., as they play host to Hamilton and Middlebury at Samuelson-Muir Pool.
