WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - The camaraderie of the Williams College Alpine skiing team makes for an elite environment.
"My favorite part about being on the Alpine skiing team is the people," said senior
Bennett Snyder. "We spend nearly every day of the fall and winter together, whether that be training, studying, skiing or anything else. We go through the highs and lows together and it has made us a family. Spending time with this team inspires me to not only be a better teammate, captain and student-athlete, but also a better person."
The Ephs begin the 2025 season on Friday, Jan. 10, and Saturday, Jan. 11, during the Bates Carnival at Sunday River in Newry, Maine.
"We are looking forward to getting back on the snow, helping some student-athletes come back from injuries and developing our first-year student-athletes," said third-year head coach
Amber McHugh. "Everyone has been working hard in our offseason, with captains' practices throughout the fall and our Thanksgiving and New Year camps. Our goals are to be as competitive as possible in the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association (EISA) and have Ephs qualify and compete during the NCAA Championships at Dartmouth."
The Ephs return 11 student-athletes from last year, featuring seniors
Chloe Aust,
Jane Gutchess,
Carter Louchheim and Snyder, juniors
Cooper Iacobelli,
Riley McHugh,
Maddie Semet and
Eliza Sullivan and sophomores
Evan Cook,
Chloe Lathrop and
Mackenzie Leach.
The newcomers include first years
Simon Baron,
Taylor Dulaney,
Charlie Koenig,
Clementine Mannes and
William Zurbay and junior
Peter Laino.
Whit Montgomery-Nassif returns for his second season as an assistant coach and the team captains are Gutchess and Snyder.

"As a captain this year, I am focused on fostering three key elements in a strong work ethic, a competitive drive to win and an appreciation for every aspect of our sport," said Snyder. "Embracing all components of our training from physical conditioning and equipment preparation to on-hill practice is crucial for success on the college circuit. By combining this approach with a work ethic and competitiveness, our team is positioned for success this season. Not only preaching this to the team, but setting the best example possible is how I have chosen to lead the team this season."
Highlights during the 2024 season included Aust and Gutchess placing fifth and 11th overall, respectively, during the giant slalom at the Colby Carnival. Gutchess also placed fifth overall during giant slalom at the Harvard Carnival, while Cook finished 10th overall during the giant slalom at the Williams Carnival.
The Ephs compete in the St. Lawrence Carnival on Jan. 16-17 at Whiteface Mountain in Wilmington, New York, and then take their talents to the Saint Michael's Carnival on Jan. 31-Feb. 1 at Smugglers' Notch Resport in Jeffersonville, Vermont. The Dartmouth Carnival takes place on Feb. 7-8 at Dartmouth Skiway in Lyme Center, New Hampshire.
"We are fortunate to have a long history, with a varsity team since 1924 and supportive alumni," said McHugh. "Today we put an emphasis on having fun and being loose, while continuing to take our sport and season seriously."
Williams takes part in the Middlebury Carnival on Feb. 14-15 at the Middlebury Snowbowl in Hancock, Vermont. The EISA Championship/UNH Carnival occurs on Feb. 21-22 at the Mittersill Alpine Resort in Franconia, New Hampshire.
"We have all of our six carnivals circled," said McHugh. "Each race is an opportunity to earn points to qualify for the NCAA Championship. Being able to get consistent and quality training is a huge factor, while we strive to be successful on the hill. We had more training this year before the New Year than we had in the last few years, so continuing to get a good volume of skiing under our feet will help make us a more competitive team in the EISA."
Snyder plans on soaking in every experience during his final run with the Ephs.
"Not only is this my final season, but I am also coming back from injury," said Snyder. "I plan on enjoying as much time as possible with my teammates and also hopefully coming back from injury stronger and faster than I was before. I am especially looking forward to the Saint Michael's Carnival. It is where I achieved my personal best result and the hill's characteristics complement my technical strengths."
