Men’s track opens season at pair of Boston meets

BOSTON, Mass. - The Williams College women's indoor track and field team opened the winter season competing at a pair of Boston-area events, the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener hosted by Boston University, and the New Balance Opener at The Track at New Balance.

Many Ephs had noticeable performances at either venue, with one particular highlight coming at New Balance in the 5k, where senior Luke Zanuck continued his momentum from the cross-country season, setting a huge PR at 14:40.01 to win the event. First-year TJ Zwall also enjoyed a great first collegiate 5k, taking 4th place in 14:47.48 and winning his heat.

Most of the Williams mid-distance and distance runners were also at New Balance, and in the 3k, Keiyu Mamiya was the first collegiate finisher and second overall in 8:36.08, followed by Liam O'Connor (4th overall and 2nd collegiate) at 8:41.71 and Ethan Striff-Cave (5th, 3rd collegiate) at 8:48.74.

In the mile, a deep Ephs crew was led by Zachary Liu-Walter in 5th at 4:26.66, with Alex Friedman earning 7th at 4:29.43, Charles Dybala 9th at 4:30.96, and Luis Angel Mendoza in 12th at 4:32.40. Liu-Walter also captured 8th in the 300m at 36.23.

Pole vaulter Vincent VanMaaren won his event with a mark of 4.55m, well ahead of second place at 4.00m, and Uly Junker earned third in the long jump at 6.67m. Gabe Levin captured 8th place in the weight throw with a mark of 13.41m.

In the deep, mostly-Division 1 fields at BU, the Ephs also saw great performances. Henry Reinke ran the 10th best 600m in Williams history with a 1:22.27, good for 6th overall and first in his heat. Leo Bachulis was less than a second behind at 1:23.11, good for 10th. Yanni Kakouris was 4th in the 200m, winning his heat with a time of 22.35, and also earned 11th in the 60m dash with a 7.19. In the 400m, Bryce Cooper captured 2nd place at 49.29, winning his heat and finishing second overall, and Juan Talisayon was 6th at 49.87.

The Ephs will break from competition now until mid-January, when the team will travel to Vermont for the Middlebury Winter Classic on January 16 and 17.
