Ephmen Surge to 10th on Day 3 of NCAA Championships, Liu and Relays Shine

GREENSBORO, NC – The Ephmen put up strong swims at prelims this morning, setting them up well for finals tonight on the third full day of the 2025 Division 3 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. At the end of the night, the Ephmen sat in 10th with 98 points.

The Williams 200 medley relay was the first race of the night for the Ephmen. The squad of Charlie Venic, Michael Grover, Barrett Heritage, and Mason Green qualified for the consolation final placing 16th in the morning prelims heats. Venci took it out fast in a 22.57 backstroke leg followed by Grover's quick tempo breaststroke (24.91). Heritage had quick underwaters that propelled him in his butterfly leg touching in a stunning split of 21.83. Green swam the freestyle anchor leg in a 20.17, almost under the 20 second mark. The team finished overall 16th place with a finals time of 1:29.48. 

Ryan Nunez was the sole Ephman to compete in the first individual event of the night, the 200 butterfly. Coming in as the top seed (9th overall) in the consolation final, Nunez looked to maintain his placing. With a strong back half in his race, Nunez swam a lifetime best time of 1:47.04 dropping half a second from his morning swim. 

Charlie Venci competed in the 100 backstroke in the morning sessions and finished 22nd overall in a time of 49.32. 

The afternoon diving session featured the Ephmen diving team of Haochen Liu and Calder Biondi for the 1 meter competition. The competition consisted of 5 compulsoryary dives and 6 optional dives. 

Biondi finished up his first season as an Eph with five dives scoring over 40 points. His tenth dive, Forward 2 1/2 Somersault Pike (105B), was his highest scoring dive scoring 50.70 points. Biondi also had a clean Inward 2 1/2 Somersault Tuck (405C) and Forward 2 1/2 Somersault 1 Twist Pike (5152B) which scored 46.50 and 43.20 points respectively. Biondi finished with a total of 388.60 points in 23rd place. 

"Calder is one of the only two first years who made a presence at this year's men's NCAA diving meet." head diving coach Brandon Pearson said. "He has made his mark in DIII diving and is a force to be reckoned with."

Liu put up a great performance today finishing 11th in the preliminary competition which qualified him into the consolation final right after. Liu had a high voluntary score which remained, setting himself up well for the consolation final which only consisted of optional dives. 4 out of 6 of Liu's optional dives scored over 40 points in the consolation final. Highlights included Liu's Inward 1 1/2 Somersault Pike (403B) and Back 1 1/2 Somersault 1 1/2 Twist Free (5233D) which scored 46.80 and 46.25 points respectively. With a stunning finals performance, Liu moved up placing 10th overall with a total of 438.95 points. 

"Haochen had his lifetime best 1 meter finish at the national stage today." Pearson said. "He has proven yet again how much of a competitor he is, never letting any setback stop him from accomplishing greatness. This defending NESCAC champion is one on his path to becoming one of the greatest divers in Williams history."

The final event of the evening session was the top heat of the 800 freestyle relay. The Williams team consisted of Ryan Nunez, Carter Anderson, Oliver Schalet, and Harrison Williams. Nunz blasted off with the front of the field in a best time of 1:37.74. Anderson kept up their momentum in a 1:38.72. Schalet had the fastest split of the field in the third leg with a 1:36.73. Williams finished the job in a lifetime best split of 1:38.89 to take third place overall. The team had a final time of 6:32.08 gaining them 32 points.

"It's been a lot of fun down here with the team and they have done a great job of coming together and finding their groove." assistant coach Allie Clark said. "There were some great moments today and I'm looking forward to one last ride with this group tomorrow to finish out this meet and season together!"

The final day of competition starts tomorrow at 10am with the 100 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 200 breaststroke, 1650 freestyle, and 400 freestyle relay
