Ephs return to action at Middlebury Winter Classic

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - The Williams College women's track & field team competed for the first time in the new year this weekend at the Middlebury Winter Classic, with a number of standout performances throughout the team.

Ellie Fitzgerald stood out with a school record pole vault of 3.93m, which was also good enough to win the event, finishing well ahead of the second- and third-placed competitors from the University of Vermont. Audrey Cheng earned 4th in the same event with a mark of 3.15m.

Amelie Jamanka also earned an event win for the Ephs, winning the high jump with a mark of 1.63m, topping a strong field that included fifth-place finisher Aurora Lewis at 1.48m. In the throws, Maria Fareti was over a meter better than anyone else in the field, winning the weight throw with a mark of 16.33m.

The mile was another event dominated by the Ephs, as Williams had the top six finishers cross the line. Morgan Eigel led the way with a 4:58.45, followed by Kate Tuttle just .41 back, with the duo being the only finishers under five minutes. Charlene Peng, Tamar Byl-Brann, Jordan Liss-Riordan and Kate Swann were the next for Ephs to cross the line. The 1000m also saw the Ephs dominate, with Ginger Long winning at 3:00.93, followed closely by teammate Clara Gahm at 3:03.01. Another notable distance performance was Fiona Picone's fifth-place finish in the 3000m at 10:37.92.

Livi Mazerolle finished second overall in the heptathlon on Friday, winning the event's shot put and 800m.

In the sprints, Olivia LaBelle and Hannah Thomas were both strong in the 60m hurdles, finishing 4th (9.45) and 5th (9.98), and Clair Jensen earned 4th in the 600m with a 1:38.20. Ella Sukup captured 4th in the 60m with a 7.96, just ahead of Bella King-Harvey at 8.14. The two-day event closed with the 4x800m relay, which the Ephs won with a mark of 9:30.68.

No team scores were awarded at the meet, and the Ephs will look to continue building into shape in two weeks when the team travels to Boston to compete in a pair of events: the BU Terrier and the Harvard Invitational, both taking place January 30 and 31.
