DELMAR, N.Y. — Led by a 1-under 69 by first-year Angela Nip, the Williams College women's golf team finished the rainy first round of the UAlbany Doc Sauers Invitational in the lead with a 299 (+19), one stroke ahead of the host school. The remainder of the 10-team field are comprised of Division I schools, and Nip's 69 is alone atop the individual standings as well.
"The energy has been great this weekend, and the team showed good discipline today in the challenging conditions," Williams Head Coach Tomas Adalssteinson said. "It's easy to compound mistakes here, so you have to play smart and stick to your game plan. And it is always fun to see a player break par like Angela did today."
Nip began on the third hole of the 5,888-yard, par-70 course at Normanside Country Club, and after six holes of play, she was 1-over with five pars. She then proceeded to sink three straight birdies, and a fourth on the first hole (her 17th) allowed her to beat par for the round. She ended the day four strokes ahead of three other golfers in the 58-player field.
One other Eph completed the round among the top 10. Senior Emma Abramson posted 11 pars and a birdie on the 135-yard, par-3 third hole (her 17th of the day) to wrap her day with a 5-over 75, good for a tie for 10th. Her classmate, Natalie Cheong, was just one stroke behind her with a dozen pars for a 6-over 76, leaving her tied for 14th.
The other Williams golfer contributing to the team score was first-year Sadie Wu with a 79 (+9).
The second and final round will begin on Monday morning at 9 a.m.
