RIDGEFIELD, Conn. —Â
In the second and final round of the Wesleyan Fall Invitational, the Williams College women's golf team vaulted over host Wesleyan into second place by carding a 19-over 303 on Sunday with first-year Sadie Wu leading the charge. The rookie shot a 1-over 72 over the 18 holes, which was the second-best total of the day, jumping 10 spots in the standings into a tie for third in the 60-player field.
"We did better as a team today," noted Williams Head Coach Tomas Adalssteinson. "It didn't quite fall for us, but we're getting closer to our best golf. We've had some good individual performances, and the next step is to connect more of them together."
Wu carded a 7-over 77 in the opening round, but with the course altered for the second round as a 5,614-yard, par-71 loop, Wu enjoyed a much better day, even with a bogey on the first hole. The next six holes produced four pars sandwiched between a pair of birdies, only to be undone by three straight bogeys. A birdie on 11 was followed by a double on 12 with another birdie on 13. She then closed strong with four pars and one more birdie on 16 to enter the clubhouse with a 72 (+1) today and a 149 (+8) overall.
Joining Wu in the top 10 was senior Natalie Cheong who equaled her score in relation to par at 6-over today with 10 pars and one birdie and 12-over for the tournament, tying for 10th. First-year Angela Nip was only one stroke behind Cheong in the final standings, tied for 12th at 13-over par, by besting her by a stroke today with a 5-over 76 thanks in part to three birdies.
Rounding out the scorers for the Ephs was sophomore Zoe Wynn who, like Cheong, matched her first round score to tie for 14th with a 155 (+14). Both she and senior Emma Abramson had one birdie on the day.
Bowdoin, which also shot a 19-over 303 to tie Williams for the low score of the day, took home the team title with a 298-303—601 (+37) to hold off the Ephs by 10 strokes. Wesleyan was 31-over today, which dropped them to third, four strokes behind Williams.
The women will be back in action for the UAlbany Doc Sauers Invitational at Normanside Country Club in Delmar, New York on Oct. 11-12. The action begins each day at 8 a.m.
