BRUNSWICK, Maine — Sophomore Zoe Wynn carded a 2-under 71 on Saturday afternoon, leading the Williams College women's golf team to a tie for third with a 6-over 298 at the conclusion of the first round of the Polar Bear Shootout hosted by Bowdoin College. The top five teams are separated by just two strokes with Hamilton College atop the leaderboard and Middlebury College one stroke back, while the host school and Babson College matched Williams.
Wynn started on the 17th hole of the 5,702-yard, par-73 course at Brunswick Golf Club with a bang, draining a birdie. Over the next eight holes, she made par five times and bogeyed the other three, but she caught fire over the final nine holes with four birdies and five pars. Her 71 left her in a tie for third, two strokes behind Wesleyan College's Amanda Phillips.
While Wynn's five birdies were the most by an Eph golfer, there were plenty more recorded. First-year Angela Nip made the most of her first collegiate round, sinking three birdies and making par on 12 others to end the round tied for ninth at even par. Sophomore Petra Yee added four birdies to the Williams effort as she carded a 3-over 76 to tie her for 24th, and senior Natalie Cheong drained three more birdies in producing a 5-over 78, tied for 37th.
Senior Emma Abramson may not have had any birdies, but she was one of only two of the 87 entrants to sink an eagle during the round as she wrapped up the 18 holes at 6-over par. And first-year Katie Ha saw her first collegiate action playing as an individual, dropping three birdies as part of her 7-over 80.
The second and final round of the Polar Bear Shootout will begin at 9 a.m. on Sunday with a shotgun start.
