MIDDLEBURY, Vt. — The steady rain throughout the second and final round of the George Phinney Classic didn't dampen the spirits of the Williams College women's golf team as the Ephs finished second overall with a 311-317—628 (+60), thanks in part to the strong play of senior Emma Abramson today. The co-captain carded the low round in the field of 62 players with a 3-over 74 with 15 pars as she finished third overall with an 11-over 153.
But it was another Eph who stole the show as first-year Sadie Wu, playing as an individual in her collegiate debut, shared medalist honors by turning in a 76-75—151 (+9) over the two rounds, sinking two birdies during each 18.
"I am super proud of how the team supported each other and kept fighting the challenging conditions," Williams Head Coach Tomas Adalssteinson said following the conclusion of the event. We are disappointed we fell just a bit short of winning the team title, but it only motivates us for next weekend."
Wu began the day strong with a pair of birdies and four pars on her first six holes, but like everyone else, she battled the weather and wound up with a 75 today to tie Hamilton's Aubrey Lee — who was tied for the lead after the first round at 2-over — atop the leaderboard.
Although Abramson started her round with a bogey, then proceeded to make par on each of the next 12 holes en route to her 74, finishing all alone in third place.
Two other Ephs finished in the top 10 as well: sophomore Michelle Ding tied for sixth with a 74-83—157 (+15) and sophomore Zoe Wynn tied for ninth by carding an 80-78—158 (+16). First-year Angela Nip provided the other score for the team today with an 11-over 82 and was 18-over for the two rounds to tie for 18th.
Next up for Williams is its home tournament next weekend on Sept. 26-27. Saturday's action will begin at 12:30 p.m. with the second and final round on Sunday at 8:30 a.m.
