WILLIAMSTOWN, MA - After going down 3-0 in doubles, Williams
fell to conference foe Amherst by a narrow score this
afternoon. In spite of the early deficit, the Ephs fought back
to win four of six singles points.
Head coach Alison Swain was proud of her team's ability to fight
back. "it was really tough for us to go down 3-0 in doubles. We
didn't have a lot of momentum going into singles," she said. "The
girls were determined not to go down without a fight, and I'm
really proud of how we fought across the board. We left it all out
there."
In doubles play, duos Cary Gibson and Grace Baljon, and Allie
Rottkamp and Nikki Reich, playing on courts one and two
respectively, fell by 8-6 scores. On court three, Marchese and
Schneidman fell 8-5. In exhibition play, Ashley Parsons and Jane
Kelley topped their Lord Jeffs opponents 8-4 on court four, while
Geni Loomis and Kathryn Friedman fell 8-3 on court five.
Going into singles play Williams needed to gain five out of six
singles points - a difficult feat, especially against Amherst, the
defending NESCAC champions. The Williams women fought hard though,
gaining victories from Marchese and Baljon on courts three and two,
respectively. The next match to finish was Rottkamp on court six,
who fell to her Amherst opponent. The loss for
Williams put Amherst just one point away from victory.
The Lord Jeffs claimed their fifth point soon after, as Parsons
fell on court four in a second set tiebreaker. With the score at
5-2, Gibson and Reich contiued their matches with no hopes of a
team victory. Showing inredible fortitude, the Williams girls
continued to fight and earned another pair of victories for
Williams, to finish with a final score of 5-4.
"The girls fought so hard," said Swain. "Cary and Nikki did a
great job of staying focused and fighting to stay in the match and
make it close."
Williams gained another pair of wins in the five singles
exhibition matches, from Schneidman and Ferrara. Loomis, Friedman,
and Kelley all fell in their singles exhibtion matches.
Next up for Williams is Wellesley, tomorrow at 1 pm.
