BRUNSWICK, ME — The Williams College
field hockey team dropped a difficult 1-0 decision to national
power Bowdoin Saturday, ending the Ephs' five-game win
streak.
The Polar Bears (6-0) scored in the first 12 minutes of the
game, as junior Kate Gormley scored off a penalty corner. Williams
(5-1) threatened to score in the final 10 minutes of the contest,
but was stymied in its attempts.
“We certainly did not bring our best game up here,”
Williams head coach Alix Rorke said. “I want to give Bowdoin
all the credit in the world because they are a very strong team,
but we cannot play the way we played today and expect to
win.”
The Polar Bears, ranked No. 3 in the country, came out strong in
the first half, creating several scoring opportunities in the first
half until Gormely cashed one of those chances in. Williams held an
8-7 advantage in penalty corners for the game, but the Polar Bears
had a 5-3 edge in the first 35 minutes.
“Bowdoin came out and put a lot of pressure on us and we
did not respond well to that pressure,” Rorke said. “We
were not supporting one another the way we needed to and did not
communicate well. We allowed them to take us out of our
game.”
The Ephs did put together a better effort in the second half,
especially in the final 10 minutes when they had a couple of
chances to tie the game. Junior Jess Overlander had a shot off a
penalty corner go just wide, and another that was stopped by
Bowdoin goalkeeper Emileigh Mercer.
Williams goalie Lindsey Jones finished the game with 12 saves,
seven in the first half.
“Bowdoin deserved to win, they executed better than we
did,” Rorke said. “Hopefully, we can learn from
this.”
