MIDDLETOWN, CT—Williams field hockey
(1-0) overcame the hot and sticky turf of Smith Field to start
their season out right with a 3-1 victory against Little Three
rival, Wesleyan (0-1). Williams' standout and reigning NESCAC
Player of the Year, Meighan McGowan, netted the first goal for the
Ephs with 12:24 left in the first half, putting the Ephs in the
lead.
Coming into the second half up 1-0, K.K. Krieg increased Williams'
lead with a goal, assisted by Meighan McGowan, with 28:58 left in
play. Williams then took advantage of a penalty corner as Anne de
Saint Phalle scored a goal directly off a pass from junior Arianna
Kourides with 13:54 left in the game.
Sophomore goalkeeper Bethany Baker played the first 51 minutes of
the game and turned in a solid performance in net, making 3 saves.
Fellow sophomore, Lindsey Jones finished the game with 19 minutes
of play and 2 saves. Head coach Alex Rorke was very pleased with
both Baker and Jones performance, "They both played
great…it's good to be in a position with two strong
goalies." Wesleyan scored their lone goal on a penalty stroke shot
in the second half.
Both the midfield and defense stood out in their ability to
control the game. While most of the play was in the offensive zone
for the Ephs, the midfield and defense can be credited with setting
up great plays for the offense, as well as playing great
defensively. Junior Taylor Wilson-Hill stood out with an extremely
strong performance in the backfield.
Williams out shot Wesleyan 20-7. Both assistant coach Chris Mason
and head coach Rorke were pleased with the Ephs performance.
Everyone saw playing time during the victory; "We have incredible
depth on the team, so everyone should be playing," responded coach
Rorke. Coach Rorke was especially pleased with her seniors'
performance and ability to lead the underclassmen throughout the
game.
