Eph first year Kristen Tubbs fired a 77, the best round of her
young collegiate career, to lead the Ephs to a first place tie with
Middlebury in a field of 13 teams the first day of the Williams
Fall Classic. Williams and Middlebury both shot a 325, while
Amherst sits just one shot back with a team score of 326.
Tubbs, Middlebury's Courtney Mazzei and Megan Doherty of Holy
Cross tied for the day's best round on the 5,802 par 71 Taconic
layout at 76. Mazzei opened her round with a 35 on the front nine,
while Doherty and Tubbs each carded a 36.
Doherty and Tubbs gained a shot on Mazzei over the second nine
holes with 41s, while Mazzei shot a 42. "I'm really happy for
Kristen [Tubbs] – it's her low round of the year," said Eph
co-head coach Kris Herman. Mary Gelber (79) and Melissa Barton (80)
really battled today by bouncing back from some tough holes. They
were not at their best but they fought through it."
"Overall I'm happy we are tied for first, but we need to get one
more low score so that we have four on the same day and show what
we are capable of scoring," said Herman.
The Williams Fall Classic will conclude with a final round of 18
holes beginning at 8:30 AM tomorrow. Tomorrow's round will also be
scored as the NESCAC Tournament for NESCAC conference members as
well as the Williams Fall Classic.
Williams is a two-time defending champion of the NESCAC
Tournament.
