Williamstown, MA-- Despite the Ephs (6-8) collectively playing
their most competitive game yet, their regular season came to a
disappointing close after falling to Middlebury College (12-2) on a
sudden victory goal in the second overtime on Friday evening at
Renzie Lamb Field.
Playing the hardest they have all season, Williams College showed
up Friday night and put it all on the line. Being the last game of
the regular season, the Ephs starting lineup included all seven
seniors: Arianna Kourides, Meighan McGowan, Taylor Wilson-Hill,
Sarah Burleigh, Julia Nawrocki, Jess Overlander, and Elspeth
Macmillan.
Their initial aggressiveness and collective strength was
reflected in their opening goal scored in the first five minutes of
the game off a penalty corner by senior Meighan McGowan (Greenwich,
Conn.) off an assist by senior Arianna Kourides (Rye, NY).
Middlebury responded to the goal with ten minutes left on the clock
with a goal by sophomore Chase Delano (Greenwich, Conn.) off a pass
by sophomore Allison Grant (Lousiville, KY).
With the waning of the first period, sophomore Rebecca Gilbert
(West Chester, Penn.) hit net for Williams second goal of the night
off an assist by senior Jess Overlander (New Canaan, Conn.)
with only 6.6 seconds remaining. In the second period, Ephs fought
to maintain control, but the Panthers brought the score to a tie at
2-2 off a penalty corner with the goal scored by Delano and once
again assisted by Grant. At the end of the second period, the
scored remained tied leading the Ephs and Panthers to two sudden
victory overtimes.
The game appeared to be headed toward a penalty stroke finish when
Middlebury scored the deciding goal with 3:19 left in the second
overtime. With roles reversed from the previous two goals, Grant
scored the goal off an assist by Delano.
Williams finished the game with a total of 11 shots, 8 of them on
goal, while Middlebury had 23 shots, 14 of them on goal. Throughout
the game the Panthers tallied 14 penalty corners to the Ephs 9.
Eph sophomore goalie Katrina Tulla (New Canaan, Conn.) played all
96:41 minutes of the game, earning a total of 11 saves, and 3 goals
allowed. Likewise, Panther senior goalie Caitlin Pentifallo (River
Edge, NJ) also played all 96:41 minutes with 6 saves, and 2 goals
allowed.
“We had our best game of the season in terms of playing
competitively,” commented Alix Rorke. “We scored early
and everyone contributed with a great effort, but we just came out
on the wrong end.”
