BRUNSWICK, ME. – Women's tennis is
just one win away from completing an undefeated conference schedule
in the spring season.
Upon beating Bowdoin this afternoon, 6-3, the
Ephs up their conference record to 5-0 and their overall record to
an impressive 14-2.
After breezing through NESCAC competition last
weekend, the Ephs faced a slightly more challenging Polar Bear
squad. Williams
finished doubles play with a 2-1 advantage, but encountered some
tough matches in singles play.
The middle of the Williams lineup proved to be
the key to victory today. The Ephs' number-one
player, Cary Gibson, fell to Bowdoin's Kristen Raymond in
straight sets while Annie Hancock fell in three sets at court
six. Hancock rallied
from a first set defecit to deliver a 6-0 second set, but
couldn't muster that same intensity into the third.
“Bowdoin is a competitive team,”
said Williams head coach Alison Swain. “They pushed us hard in
both single sand doubles, and I was really pleased with the
team's competitive spirit that they needed to pull it
out.”
Williams will close out their regular season
schedule tomorrow at Bates at 10:00 a.m.
