Box Score LEWISTON, Maine -- Williams College grabbed a 3-0 lead in the
first half and held off Bates College's rally in the second half to
register a 4-2 NESCAC field hockey victory Saturday at Campus
Avenue Field.
The visiting Ephs (1-1, 1-0 NESCAC) scored back-to-back goals on
penalty corners in the first 13 minutes for a 2-0 lead. Senior Jess
Overlander (New Canaan, Conn.) struck first, assisted by junior Amy
Siedlicki (Madison, Conn.). She was followed three minutes later by
senior Arianna Kourides's (Rye, N.Y.) tally on another penalty
corner play.
Williams continued to dominate the first half, mounting a 17-0
edge in shots in the period. Senior Julia Nawrocki made it 3-0 with
5:58 to play in the period, assisted by junior Anne de Saint
Phalle.
Bates came out a different team for the second half. The Bobcats
took their first shot of the game on their first penalty corner of
the game, when junior Samantha Rothkopf's shot caromed off of the
left goal post. Junior Morgan Maciewicz collected the ball outside
the circle, dribbled in and fed senior Emily Sampson, who slammed
the ball in past Williams goalie Katrina Tulla to make it 3-1 with
26:36 left in the game.
Bates made it 3-2 with 9:25 remaining on a penalty corner, when
sophomore Stephanie Cabot (Dover, Mass.) drove in first-year Kelly
McManus's pass from the edge of the circle.
The Ephs received an insurance goal with 1:13 left, as de Saint
Phalle scored unassisted to make it 4-2.
Although Bates rebounded in the second half with six shots and five
penalty corners, Williams finished the game with a 30-6 edge in
shots and a 13-5 advantage in penalty corners.
Bates sophomore Katie McEnroe had 14 saves in net for the Bobcats.
Tulla came up with one save for Williams.
