WELLESLEY, Mass. – With the first scheduled day of played
canceled by bad weather, the Ephs and the other competitors had to
contend with a rainy Sunday morning start at the Nehoiden Golf
Course (par 72 - 5,860 yards) - site of the first annual Ann S.
Batchelder Golf Invitational. Hosted by Wellesley College, the top
spot at the tournament was taken by Middlebury College with a team
score of 335.
Kristen Tubbs helped steer the Williams team to
a tie for third place with Vassar with her score of 83. The score
claimed an 8th place individual team score for the freshmen as well
as her best performance yet in collegiate play. Senior
Melissa Barton and junior Mary
Gelber also contributed to the team's placement -
both with two scores under 90, a 86 and 89 respectively.
"We still have yet to really put it all together and have not,
as a team, come close to reaching our potential," said Coach Herman
in response to the teams performance Sunday. While the weather was
an additional and unexpected challenge to contend with, she
insisted that "it became more of a factor for us than it should
have [for the Ephs]."
The single round team score of 348 placed the Ephs after
Middlebury and just eight strokes behind rival Amherst, who ended
the day with a team score of 340.
