Ephs survive Babson, 2-1

Box Score

BABSON PARK, Mass. - The Williams College men's soccer team used a pair of first half scores to survive a fierce Bason comeback and earn the 2-1 victory at Hartwell-Rogers Field Sunday. The Ephs, ranked third in New England and 19th in the nation by NSCAA, preserve their unblemished record and improve to 5-0-1 overall (2-01 NESCAC). The Beavers saw their five game win streak snapped and fall to 6-3-0 overall.

Williams dominated in the first half of play, scoring two goals while mounting a 13-3 shot advantage. Will Whiston scored the first goal at 15:41, as he headed a free kick by Gaston Kelly into the upper right corner after a Babson foul near midfield. The Ephs then struck again just over a minute later, as another foul just outside the box enabled Pierre Meloty-Kapella to bend a shot around the wall and inside the left post at 16:58.

Babson cut its deficit in half early in the second stanza, as Billy Nickerson one-timed a thru ball past the Williams defense to teammate Ayo Iwuagwu who found himself alone with Eph keeper Andrew Lyons-Berg and squeaked a low runner into the corner of the net at 52:59.

Babson would channel the momentum into an increasingly aggressive attack, ultimately producing three excellent chances to tie the match. The first came when Ian Siekman's header off a corner kick sailed just over the cross bar at 58:42. Nickerson then fired a shot just wide of the left post off a header from Dan Fogarty with two minutes remaining in regulation, and Chris Morris' header off another Fogarty cross went just wide of the same post with four seconds left to play.

Williams outshot Babson, 25-11, in the contest. Babson keeper Peter Crowley stopped five of those shots in net for the Beavers, while Eph keeper Andrew Graham made one save while playing all but 11 minutes in goal.

The Ephs will get a week to recover from a successful two day span wherein they produced eight scores and went 2-0. However, next weekend the Ephs will return to conference action when they travel to Amherst to battle their arch rival the Lord Jeffs. That game is scheduled for a 2:30 PM kick off on Saturday, October 3rd.
