Ephs fall to Bates, 1-0, in season opener

Box Score

LEWISTON, ME.  The Bobcats (1-0, 1-0 NESCAC) clinched their first win of the season Saturday afternoon in a 1-0 victory over Williams (0-1, 0-1 NESCAC).  Though Williams' aggressive offense tallied 14 more shots than their NESCAC opponents over the duration of the competition, Bates made good on a shot attempt with less than five minutes remaining on the clock in the second to capture their first victory of the year.

From the start of the first, the Ephs' offensive line played an aggressive match accruing 9 shots to the Bobcat's 4.  Despite their fluid passing sequences that resulted in a plethora of shots on goal, Williams never found the back of the net and both teams exited the half scoreless.  Each team posted two penalty corners for the period.

Kicking off the second half, Williams increased their shot output by 3 totaling 12 for the period, but continued struggling to convert.  Though their opponents took only three shots in the second half and tallied 4 penalty corners to the Ephs' 8, accuracy tipped the outcome in their favor.  65:53 into the competition, Bates sophomore Bridget Meedzan capitalized on a loose ball in the circle making the pass to junior Michelle Brady who guided the ball past sophomore Eph goalie Ariana Spiliotes (Bethesda, MD) for the game-winning goal.

Overall, Williams led the Bobcats in both shots and penalty corners totaling 21 shots and 8 penalty corners while Bates had 7 and 4 respectively.

Bates' sophomore goalkeeper Becca Otley (Cumberland, Maine) tallied an impressive 13 saves for the match and allowed no goals.  Spiliotes had 2 saves and 1 goal allowed for the day.  Each spent the full 70 minutes in goal.

Williams Head Coach, Alix Burrale, commented on the match: “Though today ended in a loss, it served as a good foundation for the season.  A lot of first-years made it into the game and seeing our overall team ability come together and mesh was really promising.  We look forward to Tuesday's match against Keene where we have the opportunity to turn around and bounce back.”

The Ephs will be playing at Keene State at 6PM Tuesday evening.
