Ephs edge Keene State, 3-2, in double overtime victory

Box Score

KEENE, NH.  After junior Eph Casey Greene (Greenwich, Conn.) made good on a penalty stroke in the second frame to tie the score, sophomore teammate Emily Jablonski (Madison, Conn.) rallied in sudden-death overtime scoring the game-winner to garner Williams (1-1, 0-1 NESCAC) their first win on the season Tuesday evening.  Tallying over three times as many shots as the Owls (2-1, 1-0 LEC) and a 5 penalty corner edge for the 90 total minutes of play, Williams dealt Keene State their first loss of the year.

Williams kicked off the prolific scoring for the evening 22:33 into the competition when first-year Sara Thompson (Short Hills, NJ) deflected the ball into the goal off a penalty corner from classmate Caitlin Conlon (Sudbury, Mass.) giving the Ephs a 1-0 lead.  Just over 4 minutes later at 26:40, Owl Kerry Howe finished in the circle off an assist from Niki Smith bringing the score to a 1-1 draw at the end of the first.  The Ephs outshot Keene State 6 to 4 and each squad tallied 2 penalty corners for the half.

Momentum from the first period was not lost for either team in the brief halftime interim as the Owls posted another goal 15 minutes into play when Elizabeth Coffin found the back of the net unassisted at 50:28.  Williams' offensive intensity continued to gain steam in the second as they piled on 8 more shots and 7 extra penalty corner opportunities for the frame.  Shortly after Jablonski was rewarded a penalty shot and finished wide of the goal, Greene successfully converted her penalty shot at 57:53 sending the 2-2 tied match into overtime at the final buzzer.  Keene State grabbed 4 penalty corners and took 3 shots in the second.

From the outset of the first overtime, the purple cows largely controlled the game stacking up 6 shots to the Owl's 0.  Despite an aggressive offensive line, first-year Owl goalie Caitlin DavinoDraper (Hanson, Mass.) defied William's shooting efforts tallying 3 saves in the process and pushing the game into a second overtime.  At 90:51, Jablonski's sudden-death goal ended the competition elevating the Ephs to a 3-2 advantage and clinching their first win of the year.

Williams sophomore goalie Ariana Spiliotes (Bethesda, MD) had 3 saves and 2 goals allowed for the night while DavinoDraper had 10 saves and 3 goals allowed.  Both goalkeepers totaled 90:51 minutes in goal.

The Ephs will meet Trinity at home this Saturday at 12PM.
