WILLIAMSTOWN, MA -- Despite an offensive comeback in the second by the Ephs (1-2, 0-2 NESCAC), Trinity (2-1, 2-1 NESCAC) tipped the match in their favor Saturday afternoon at Renzie-Lamb Field after junior Alanna Capasso found the back of the net 49:32 into the competition delivering the Bantams their second conference win on the season.
The Bantams took charge early in the first maintaining offensive possession of the ball nearly the entire frame tallying 11 shots to the Ephs' 2. Additionally, Trinity's control was reflected in a 6 penalty corner disparity grabbing 7 total penalty corner opportunities for the half. Though tentative offensively, Williams put forth a solid defensive line resisting all scoring attempts by Trinity subsequently sending each team into the second half scoreless. In the process, sophomore Eph goalie Ariana Spiliotes (Bethesda, MD) tallied 5 saves.
The opening of the second frame was marked with renewed intensity as the Ephs delivered a hard-hitting offense in response to Trinity's strong first half. Sophomore Eph Emily Pavlini (Far Hills, NJ) and first-year Sara Thompson (Short Hills, NJ) ran the ball up from the right side catalyzing shot opportunities on Trinity's goal, but all attempts were stopped short by Bantam sophomore goalie Anne Marie Scalambrino (Chicago, Ill.).
Midway through the second at 49:32, Capasso picked up the momentarily loose ball in traffic and made good on her shot attempt scoring the game-winning goal unassisted and giving her team the 1-0 lead that would remain until the final buzzer. The Bantams and Williams each came out of the second with 9 shots while Trinity maintained their penalty corner advantage from the first with 5-2 for the half.
Scalambrino secured 5 saves with no goals allowed, while Spiliotes tallied 8 saves and allowed 1 goal. Each spent the full 70 minutes in goal.
"I felt that we came out a little flat in the first and were playing too conservatively, but definitely put together a stronger second half effort. There's no doubt we were in it today but simply needed to finish at the net. In our next game we need to take command by playing with more purpose and urgency," commented head-coach Alix Burrale on today's competition.
The Ephs will play again this Tuesday at Union College at 6PM.
