Ephs overcome Wesleyan, 2-1

MIDDLETOWN, CT -- The Williams field hockey team (3-2, 1-2 NESCAC) came from behind in the second to defeat Little Three opponent Wesleyan University (2-3, 0-3 NESCAC), 2-1.

Senior Margie Fulton (Wellesley, MA), assisted by first-year Caitlin Conlon (Sudbury, MA), netted a goal 44:35 into the game to tie the score. Conlon herself made a successful bid for goal with the help of sophomore Emily Jablonski (New Canaan, CT) just 8:03 later to put the Ephs in lead.

Sophomore goalie Ariana Spiliotes (Bethesda, MD) had a solid game, saving six goals in the first and another in the second.  Wesleyan goalkeeper Tori Redding had four saves in total.

Wesleyan garnered twelve shots to Williams' seven, but only Morgan McCauley's penalty corner shot made it past Spiliotes, at 7:32.  McCauley has three shots in total, as did her teammates Ashley McLaren and Vannessa Block.  They were followed closely by Wesleyan's Liz Chabot, with two shots, and Taylor Wells, with one.

First-year Cary Hairfield (Richmond, VA) was able to shine both in offense and defense, with two shots. Seniors Helena Nannes (Bethesda, MA) and Kate Ellis (Darien, CT) finished the game with one shot each.  This strong offensive front, coupled with Fulton's shot and Conlon's stellar skills in the offensive circle, allowed the Ephs to pick up the intensity considerably in the second half.

"We were a little flat in the first half, but we played an amazing second half," noted Eph head coach Alix Barrale. "We improved our passing considerably.  Caitlin Conlin was amazing, as was Cary Hairfield, who played fantastic defense and was the spark on offense."

The Ephs will be home Sunday at noon against defending NCAA champions Bowdoin on Renzie Lamb Field.
