Box Score BRUNSWICK, MAINE – Williams Field Hockey (4-6, 2-5 NESCAC) fell to nationally ranked Bowdoin College (10-1, 6-1) by a score of 5-0 today in their second game of a NESCAC away weekend, after beating Wesleyan 2-0 on Saturday.
Bowdoin opened up the first half strong, taking control of the ball and keeping it in Williams' defensive end for the first ten minutes of play. Their offensive play culminated in a goal at the 12:53 mark, as Mettler Growney scored her first goal of the season off of an assist by Adrienne O'Donnell. Bowdoin kept up the pressure, and six minutes later their next shot hit the back of the net, stretching their lead to two goals.
Both teams went back and forth drawing fouls, but Bowdoin came out on top again, scoring their third goal of the game at the 23:04 mark. Williams made some substitutions, utilizing their depth to try and jump start new momentum. With new legs, Williams drew a penalty corner at the 27:35 mark. It would prove unsuccessful, however, and Bowdoin would take control of the ball again.
Although Eph goalie, Arianna Spiliotes would turn away a shot by Bowdoin's Olivia King, a series of penalty corners would result in another goal by Bowdoin, this time by Emily Simonton. With the score at 4-0 in Bowdoin's favor, time would run out in the half before Williams could make a comeback.
The second half started off with back-and-forth play, with each team going possession for possession. Both teams relied on the depth of their benches in the second half as play remained very even. "We had a much stronger second half," said Eph head coach Alix Barrale. "We got some corners and had some opportunities, but Bowdoin was extremely effective in front of the net."
Neither team found the back of the net until the 62:10 mark, when Bowdoin scored the fifth and last goal of the game. Although Bowdoin would take a yellow card to play man down, Williams would not be able to capitalize on their advantage and eventually drew a yellow card of her own. Spiliotes would finish with seven saves on teh day, while Bowdoin goalie Hannah Gartner would finish with four.
