Saratoga Springs, NY - The Williams women's tennis team took on Skidmore College today in their first match of the Spring, coming out on top with an 8-1 victory. The Ephs (3-0) will travel next to Virginia for a six-match road trip, leading off with Washington & Lee on 3/24.
Williams jumped out to an early lead on Sunday, claiming all three of the doubles matches. It was Rebecca Curran and freshman Giulia McDonnell Nieto del Rio who took down Goldberg/Greene from Skidmore, 8-3. Linda Shin and Juli Raventos followed, giving the Ephs a victory at 8-2. The final doubles match proved to be another promising one for the Ephs, with Maria Pylypiv and Julia Cancio lifting Williams with an 8-4 win.
In singles, it was the Ephs again who looked strong. Curran, Pylypiv and Shin all came out on top. While, Julia Cancio defeated her oponent 6-1, 6-2. McDonnell Nieto del Rio came out to an early lead, but retired in her match at 4-1, leaving the Ephs at a score of 7-1. It was freshman Mia Gancayco who closed for the Ephs, concluding the match in two sets at 6-2, 7-5, and a final score of 8-1.
Senior captain Rebecca Curran attributes today's success to preparation and aggressiveness, a staple for the Ephs this season. "I'd say that we were really prepared coming into today and it definitely showed. We're playing more aggressively as a team this year and I'm really excited to see it pay off in our spring break matches."
