Skidmore Tops Babson 5-2

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – Trailing in two doubles matches late the Thoroughbreds of Skidmore stormed back two win the last two matches decided in doubles play and took a 2-1 lead en route to a 5-2 win over Babson and advance to a Third Round match tomorrow versus host Williams at 12:00 p.m.

With the win Skidmore improves to 14-8 on the year, extends its win streak to five, and ups its NCAA Tourney record to 16-17 in this their 18th appearance. Babson finishes the year at 16-9 and in their first ever NCAA tourney the Beavers posted a 1-1 record.

Upset minded Babson, in their first NCAA Tournament appearance yesterday made history with a 5-0 First Round win over Colby-Sawyer and they proceeded to take a quick lead in doubles today versus Skidmore notching the first point of the match.

Babson's number one doubles team of Alex Freeman and Alexis Ferraro recorded an 8-3 win. When the Beavers' first doubles team left the court the number two and three doubles teams from Babson were leading in their matches. However, an impressive comeback from a 6-4 deficit by the Thoroughbred's number three pairing of Michelle Fuca and Erica Meno, overcame the efforts of Babson's Victoria Paolino and Dina Weick, 8-6, and evened the match at one all.

Skidmore's number two doubles tandem of Brianna Greene and Caroline Finnegan also battled back from a deficit, this one at 5-3, to claim an 8-6 win, giving the Thoroughbreds the 2-1 lead heading into singles play.

Skidmore used their momentum from doubles play to capture three of the four singles matches played to determination with Brianna Greene's straight set win at three making the score 3-1 in favor of the Thoroughbreds.

Babson narrowed the Skidmore lead to 3-2 when the Beaver's number one singles player Alex Freeman notched a straight set win over Skidmore's Zao Valella, 6-2, 6-3. However a win at five singles by Michelle Fuca in straight sets over Claire Foster, 6-4, 6-2 put the Thoroughbreds a win away from clinching the match.

Skidmore's fifth point came from number four singles where Erica Meno won 6-3, 6-4 over Alexis Ferraro.
