SUFFERN, NY—The Ephs began their fall season by leading the NYU Fall Invitational, shooting a collective team score of 304. NYU follows with 312, and Amherst close behind with 315.
Junior Sophie Kitchen shot three under for a 69 on the first tournament of the year and her second season with the Ephs. This score is the first three-under for Williams women's golf, and is in fact also the lowest recorded score in the program, making for a strong start to the season.
"My round today started unexceptionally," says Kitchen. "I knew that I was hitting the ball well but I did not expect to shoot low. My main focus today was definitely emotional state management and playing smart, two of our recently-added team goals. [...] I am really proud of how I stayed focused until the very end."
Kitchen is currently in the lead, four strokes ahead of Amherst's Kate Weiss and NYU's Angela Yang.
The rest of the team did well, with four Ephs in the top ten, including Kitchen. Freshman Cordelia Chan shot 76 for her first ever college tournament. Returning sophomores Phoebe Mattana and Elizabeth Gudas shot 78 and 81, respectively. Bringing up the rear is freshman Isabella Wang, who shot 87. Tracey Kim, playing as an individual, shot 79.
"I am very proud of how all my teammates managed their emotions for the first tournament of the year. It was very gratifying to tap in my ball on 18 and have my friends there sharing my excitement," said Kitchen.
The Ephs return tomorrow for the second day of the tournament.
