Box Score BRUNSWICK, ME – Williams Field Hockey (4-1/NESCAC 2-1) fell to undefeated Bowdoin College (5-0/NESCAC 4-0) by a score of 6-0 in their second game of a NESCAC away weekend after beating Colby 3-2.
The Polar Bears came off to a strong start as they netted the first goal just 2:37 into the game. Off of a corner, junior Kimmy Ganong shot the ball past Eph goalie Margaret Draper with assists from both Kelsey Mullaney and Kim Kahnweiler.
The Bowdoin pressure continued as the ball was mainly played in the Ephs' half. At 26:05 Bowdoin struck again with a goal by senior Rachel Kennedy. After a foul on Williams, Mettler Growney sent the ball to Kennedy whose shot found the back of the net.
With 30 seconds left in the first half, Bowdoin received another corner. Although the initial scoring attempt was unsuccessful, Rachel Kennedy got possession of the ball in front and pushed it through the defensive traffic for her second goal of the game.
Going into the second half, Bowdoin's offensive pressure did not let up. Just 2:20 in, Kimmy Ganong received a pass from Kennedy from the right side of the field. Ganong dribbled the ball towards the net and rifled a shot past Draper for her second of the game.
The Ephs kept Bowdoin from striking again until 64:52. Off the penalty corner, the Polar Bears demonstrated some impressive interior passing before the ball was deflected in by Rachel Kennedy. That goal gave Kennedy her third hat trick in the past three games.
The final goal of the game was also a result of a penalty corner. Alexa Baumgartner fired the ball from the top of the circle where Mettler Growney then tipped it past the Ephs defenders and goalie. Bowdoin ended the game with 17 shots and 17 penalty corners to Williams' 3 shots and 1 penalty corner. Margaret Draper had 9 saves for the Ephs and Clara Belitz had 3 for the Polar Bears.
"Bowdoin outplayed us on every front," said Ephs head coach Alix Barrale. "They beat us to every ball, out ran us in the midfield, and disrupted any offensive momentum we had. They were very disciplined in their ball handling. We just seemed a step behind the whole game. It's a disappointing performance, but one that we can definitely learn from, if we so choose. We don't have time to feel sorry for ourselves since we have a game Tuesday. Hopefully we will get back on track!"
The Ephs take on Smith College this Tuesday at 6:30pm back in Williamstown.
