Amherst shuts out Williams 4-0

Box Score

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – In a conference matchup between Williams College (5-2/NESCAC 2-2) and long-time rival Amherst College (4-2/NESCAC 1-2), it was the Lord Jeffs who came away with a 4-0 victory.

At 8:44 Amherst struck first. Junior forward Sara Culhane passed the ball towards the left side of the circle to teammate Shannon Tierney. Tierney then wound up and blasted a shot past Eph goalie Margaret Draper.

At 27:58 the Lord Jeffs tallied another goal. Off of a corner Sara Culhane received the ball at the top of the circle and took a shot on net. Draper made a diving save on this original shot, denying Culhane of a goal. With Draper on the ground, Amherst regained possession in front of the cage and senior Katie Paolano sent the ball to the back of the net.

Towards the beginning of the second half, Amherst received a penalty corner resulting in a penalty stroke for sophomore Caroline Fiore. Fiore lifted the ball past Draper at 42:28 scoring the third goal of the game.

At the 58:19 mark, Amherst senior Annie Turnbull got possession of the ball about 10 feet outside of the circle in the center of the field. She carried the ball just inside the circle before blasting a shot past Williams' defense and into the net.

"Overall, we didn't play with the intensity and confidence we needed to," said Ephs head coach Alix Barrale. "Amherst handled the ball well, made excellent passes, and capitalized in the circle. We were very hesitant defensively, which impacted our ability to get in a flow. We played better in the second half and had some decent looks at the goal, but Amherst was poised under pressure and managed to hold us scoreless."

The Ephs finished the game with 3 shots on goal and 4 penalty corners to the Lord Jeffs' 12 shots on goal and 9 penalty corners. Margaret Draper had 6 saves for the Ephs and Emily Horwitz had 2 saves for the Lord Jeffs.

Williams will be back at Williamson Field tomorrow at 12pm for another NESCAC match-up against Bates.
