FREDERICKSBURG, VA – The No. 1 ranked Williams College women's tennis team (4-0) played the No. 12 Blue Jays of Johns Hopkins University (3-2) in a match played indoors on the campus of Mary Washington University. Williams prevailed 6-3, extending the Eph dual match win streak to 30.
The Blue Jays entered the match off an exciting 5-4 win over previously undefeated TCNJ yesterday at Mary Washington University. The Ephs' last match was on March 12 at Skidmore where they defeated the Thoroughbreds 9-0.
The Ephs took a 2-1 lead into doubles posting wins at one and three and falling at two. At one doubles Juli Raventos and Linda Shin opened up a 4-0 lead and went on to win 8-2.
Julia Cancio and Hannah Atkinson at three doubles also opened up a 4-0 lead and ended up winning 8-1.
The Ephs' number two doubles team of Maya Hart and Mia Gancayco led 2-1 before falling behind 3-2 and losing 8-6.
In singles play, Linda Shin won her first set at three singles 6-0 and led early in the second set 2-1 and then led 4-3, before posting a 6-4 win to give the Ephs a 3-1 lead in the match.
Mia Gancayco at two singles fell behind dropping her first set versus Megumi Chen 6-2 and took a 2-0 lead in the second set. Gancayco went on to win the second set 6-0. She led early in the third set 3-2, then went up 4-3 and 5-4, before being defeated 7-5. Williams now led 3-2 in the match.
Juli Raventos lost her first set to Ashnaa Rao 7-5 at one singles and opened the second set up 1-0, then went ahead 3-2 before capturing the second set 6-4 to even her match. In the third set Raventos put it all together and fashioned a 6-1 win to boost the Eph lead in the match to 4-2.
At four singles Hannah Atkinson opened up a 4-1 lead in the first set and took the first set 6-1. After three games in set two Atkinson led 2-1 and she then won the next four games to close out her match 6-1 and give the Ephs' the fifth and deciding point.
After Atkinson's win the Ephs were up 5-2 with Julia Cancio playing on court five and Alex Stone on court six.
Julia Cancio opened up her first set by taking the first three games and building a 3-0 lead, which she built into a 4-1 lead and a 6-1 first set victory. In set two Cancio won 6-0 to up the match score to 6-2.
At six singles Alex Stone dropped the first set 6-1, but opened the second set up 3-2, but she lost the second set 7-6 (5) to make the final score Williams 6, Johns Hopkins 3.
Eph head coach Alison Swain noted, " the team fought really well today and remained composed on the deuce points playing no ad for the first time."
Next up for the Ephs is a 1:00 p.m. match tomorrow versus Washington & Lee that will also be played at Mary Washington University.
