Poughkeepsie, NY—After a disappointing first day, the Williams women's golf team bounced back to shoot 305 and capture first place at the Vassar Invitational, shooting a two-day total of 627. Amherst shot 327 today to come up 22 shots behind Williams at 649 and Middlebury overcame SUNY Cortland with a 678 to take third place.

Sophomore Phoebe Mattana held onto her lead from the first day and shot a two-over 74 to shoot a two-day total of 149 and win the field by six strokes.

""It was really awesome to see the team bounce back today with some low scores, especially considering the conditions," Mattana said. "We left a lot of strokes out on the course, but I think it was a great start to the spring season."

Teammate, sophomore Liz Gudas shot her lowest college score, 74, to come in second place with a two-day total of 155. Gudas fashioned three birdies, all one to three foot putts.

"I felt really confident with my ball striking and was a little shaky over my putts but managed to make a few birdies," Gudas said. "Overall, I think this was a great start to our spring season, especially with Phoebe taking first place!"

Rounding off the team score was freshman Cordelia Chan with a 75 and freshman Isabella Wang with an 82, coming in fifth and and twelfth place respectively. Wang had the only eagle in the field for the combined two days after she drained her approach shot on the fourth hole from 95 yards out. Junior Tracey Kim birdied her last hole to shoot an 89, battling a wrist injury throughout the round. She finished tied for twentieth. Senior captain Kelly Kung, who played as an individual, bettered her first-day score by six strokes to shoot an 85 and finish tied twenty-fifth.

With this tournament, the women's golf team extends their winning streak to eight straight tournaments in a row, including taking the individual award home too.

"Playing in beautiful spring conditions, the team played well today," Kangas said. "We will take a lot from today's round as we begin preparing for a great week of practice, building to the Amherst Invitational next weekend."

Up next for the Ephs is the Amherst Invitational April 16 and 17.
