Hadley, MA—Down nine strokes after the first day of play, the Ephs tried to make up lost ground but came up short and finished second to Amherst by 18 strokes at the completion of two days of play. Amherst shot a two-day total of 637, Williams shot 655, and Middlebury came third shooting 661.
Amherst junior Jamie Gracie shot a three-under, 145, to win the individual medal.
After struggling day one, freshman Cordelia Chan improved her score by 15 stokes, shooting 75 and finishing tied for thirteenth with a combined two-day total of 165.
"I really tried to focus on the mental side of my game after the round on Saturday, making smart decisions and minimizing large mistakes," Chan said. "It's always tough losing but I think the team will use this as motivation to work even harder for our home invitational and for the weeks to come."
Chan was tied with junior teammate Tracey Kim who, battling a wrist injury, shot 89 on the second day. Sophomore Liz Gudas matched her day one score of 83 and finished tied sixteenth (two-day total of 166), junior Sophie Kitchen also shot 83 on the second day, finishing tied twenty-second (two-day total of 168), and freshman Isabella Wang rounded off the scoring with an 88. She finished twenty-fourth with a two-day total of 170. Sophomore Maddy Abrahams improved her score by one stroke to shoot 87 the second day and to finish twenty-ninth with a two-day total of 175.
"Unfortunately, we did not reach our team goals today, and we were unable to win our school's first Jack Leaman Golf Championship," said Eph head coach Bill Kangas. "However, it was twelve months ago and coming off a similar result, this tournament refocused and motivated our team the rest of the season. We expect to have a great week of practice as we prepare for our Williams Spring Invitational."
The Ephs will host their second home tournament of the year next weekend (April 23 and 24) at Taconic Golf Club.
