Ephs tied for first after Day 1 of the Vassar Invitational

Poughkeepsie, NY—The Ephs started the spring season at the Vassar Invitational. They battled winds and close to freezing temperatures at Casperkill golf course to begin the tournament with a collective team score of 322, tied for first with Amherst and just ahead of SUNY Cortland at 329.

"The cold can make it pretty tough to hit greens and gage distances, so I just tried to make sure I was in a position to score on every hole by keeping my miss-hits manageable," sophomore Phoebe Mattana said.

She leads the field with a three-over, 75. Sophomore Liz Gudas followed with an 81, freshman Cordelia Chan was next with an 82, and junior Tracey Kim and freshman Isabella Wang added a pair of 84s to the team's overall score. Senior captain Kelly Kung played as in individual, posting a 91.

"Even though we battled cold temperatures, it was good to get back on the course and begin our spring tournament season," head coach Bill Kangas said. "Everyday is an opportunity to get better, and we expect build on today's effort in Sunday's round."

The Ephs tee off at 10:30 am tomorrow for a shot gun start.
