WILLIAMS FALLS TO TRINITY IN NESCAC QUARTERFINALS

Box Score HARTFORD, CT - 4th seeded Trinity College knocked out 5th seeded Williams College by scoring two goals in the second half of the NESCAC quarterfinals.

The game was a tale of two halves. The Williams College Ephs were aggressive early. Though poor weather conditions affected the accuracy of passes, the Ephs dominated possession. Eight minutes in, a quick shot from junior Shea van den Broek was saved by goalie Olivia McMichael. In the 11th, junior Catherine Torres had a breakaway scoring chance that sailed just wide. In the 24th minute, a strong shot from senior Elizabeth Welch was blocked. Though the Ephs didn't find the net in the first half, they were surely in control. Not only did Trinity fail to get into Williams' half for the first 5 minutes, but the Bantams had no shots in the entire first half.

In the second half, it seemed as though the Ephs would continue their dominance. Seventy seconds in, senior Elizabeth Welch found van den Broek who tipped the ball in goal to give Ephs the lead. It was van den Broek's 14th goal of the season and Welch's 7th assist.

However, the lead was short-lived as the Bantams went on an unpredictable scoring run. In the 34th minute, senior Caelin Flaherty's dazzling dribbling gave her the room to score her 18th goal of the season. She is currently the NESCAC leading scorer. In the 41st minute, senior India Shay dove for a deflection that gave the Bantams their second goal of the day. These shots would be all Trinity needed to pull off the victory. The Eph's best chance to even the score came with 3 minutes remaining; a backhanded shot from junior Emily Bachelor would have been the equalizer but an amazing save from McMichael squashed dreams of overtime.

Williams Coach Alix Barrale had this to say about the intense game: "So sad and disappointed we couldn't get it done especially for this senior class, an incredible group who we will miss terribly! We out-shot, out-cornered Trinity but couldn't find our groove after Trinity tied it up. Trinity played great defense and was gritty until the end. Heartbreaker!"

Williams ends the season with an 11-5 record in overall play and 6-5 in the NESCAC conference.
