New Hartford, NY- With a three-stroke advantage going into the second day of the Hamilton Invitational, the Williams College women's golf team surged forward to extend their lead to 10 shots and a team score of 613 in their first tournament win of the season. Amherst College placed second with a team total of 623, followed by New York University in third with 628.
The Ephs battled wet and windy conditions posting an impressive score of 300 today, 13 strokes better than yesterday's score. For three of the Ephs, it was their first two-day tournament of their college career.
"Really strong performances from all seven players today," commented head coach
Tomas Adalsteinsson. "Great to start the season with a team win. A lot of good shots, but we're just starting, so we will be excited to get back to practice on Tuesday."
The event's individual medalist title was captured by Gihoe Seo from Amherst College who posted a two-day score of 147.
To lead the Ephs in scoring, junior
Catalin Yturralde came back after a day-one score of 80 and shot 74 (+1). She placed tied for 5
th individually. Freshman
Gio Kim carded a solid 75 (+2) to contribute to the team score. Senior
Olivia White posted a score of 76 (+3) after making the turn at one under par. Sophomore
Tianyi Zhuang followed White with her own 76 (+3) rounding out the scoring for the Ephs. Junior
Malini Rudra struggled on the back nine with five bogeys, two pars, and one birdie but powered through to post a 79 (+6).
"Today, I was more focused on how my game would affect the team rather than how it affected my personal score and I think that really helped push me to play more aggressively and make a lot of clutch putts," said Yturralde. "I am really proud of the way the team rallied to take it home despite the rain and mosquitoes."
On the individual side, sophomore
Aishvarya Bedi went low with a score of 74 (+1), placing her tied for 3rd individually and she was highest placing Eph. Senior
Joanna Kim improved three strokes from yesterday's round with a 77 (+4). After making the turn at two under par, Kim struggled to maintain her score with three double bogeys on the back nine.
"I'm so proud of everyone this week," exclaimed Bedi. "The course was definitely challenging, but each and every one of us grinded it out to the finish. I liked how I putted today. After this weekend, I am even more excited to see what our team does for the rest of the season."
The Ephs will play their second tournament of the year next weekend on Sept 18
th and 19
th at the Middlebury Invitational to be played at Ralph Myhre Golf Club in Middlebury, Vermont.
