Women's Golf Comes Back From 3 Shots Down After Day 1 to Win George Phinney Classic

Middlebury, Vt.- The Williams women's golf team came back from a three-shot deficit to win by a thrilling twelve shots over Amherst College. The Ephs started out three behind Amherst and NYU who tied for first after 18 holes of play. Today, the Ephs left it all out on the course shooting 304, for a two-day combined total of 620.

"Excellent effort today and a strong response to yesterday from the team," head coach Tomas Adalesteinsson commented." Great to see all seven scores in the 70's. Things are moving in the right direction, and now we start to prepare for next weekend."

Although blessed with no rain, the players had to battle fast winds that circulated all day throughout the course. With the tough weather conditions, the scores were generally higher but not for the Ephs. Following a score of 313, Amherst College shot 319 today for a total of 632. NYU posted a team score of 321 for a total of 634 to finish third in the rankings. Individually, Amherst's Jessica Huang took medalist honors following an exhilarating play off with Nadlina Wanikpun from NYU. Both players finished with a two-day total of 152.

The second day scoring surge was led by senior Joanna Kim and sophomore Aishvarya Bedi. They both shot a second day score of 75, six strokes better than their first day. Kim and Bedi placed toed for 5th. Catalin Yturralde also contributed with a solid score of 76, placing her toed for third with teammate Tianyi Zhuang. Playing as an individual, Zhuang shot a second day score of 76 as well. Their combined score was 154. Junior Malini Rudra and senior Olivia White tied for 8th with a second score of 78 and 79, respectively. Freshman Gio Kim rounded out scoring for the Ephs with a 79. All Ephs placed top 11 of the field.

"I am so proud of our team's mindset going into today's round," said co-captain Joanna Kim. "I feel like we learned from yesterday, made a plan, and executed it well. Every player put their all in each shot and thought about the team more than anything else. Really excited to go at it again next week!"

The Ephs will return to the course next weekend at the Wesleyan Invite hosted at Lyman Orchards Golf Club in Middlefield, CT.
