WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – As of today, Williams Men's squash will have their first undefeated January in Williams history. Squash became a varsity sort at Williams in 1939.
With their win over Wesleyan on Saturday, the team took their 10
th and final win of the month which not only crowned them 2023 Little III champions, but also secured them this Williams first. In these ten matches, they played teams previously ranked ahead of them, Tufts, F & M, and Bates, and defended their ranking against other NESCACS. Head coach
Zafi Levy is especially proud of the team, saying "the team is composed of 14 selfless players who only care about the team success over individual accomplishment"
This team mentality has allowed the Ephs to reach several victories, as seen in everyone's commitment to pushing themselves to the limit to win.
Leonard Lee's no nonsense military attitude has traversed its way through the team during morning and afternoon practices, and Co-Captain Will Evans and
Andrew Lee have even put their body on the line in their many diving retrievals. Every member of the team is active on and off the court at matches, supporting their teammates who are playing with deafening cheers.
Their best victories this month have been against Tufts, F & M, and Bates, where the grit and determination of this team were on full display. Especially great performances from
Pierce Henderson,
Jack Lee, and
Cameron Darnell, who have either won tight five game matches or quickly beat talented opponents to swing the momentum in Williams's favor, allowing Williams to win defeat these teams.
The six new freshmen have also attributed to the team's success, with
Asher Leavy,
Alex Akbari, and
John Nicholson all having impressive records and several five-game match wins this season.
Leonard Lee,
Rafay Syed, and
Gabe Ramirez have each been a stable rock this season, always down for an extra hit and always being louder than the opposing crowds.
And finally, the leadership by captains
Udai Pal and Will Evans spurred them toward this accomplishment, who both have put in the effort 24/7 to create a wolf-pack mentality for this team. They have exhibited strength of character and lead by example, all while giving exhilarating pre-match speeches that inspire their team to victory.
The Ephs look to keep the momentum rolling into the weekend where they play Brown and the nationally ranked 10
th team, Dartmouth.
