Redlands, CA - The rain continued in California, delaying the Ephs' next match against the University of Redlands until early afternoon. Despite the dreary weather, the Ephs played with no less enthusiasm and energy, sweeping the Bulldogs 5-0.
Head Coach Anik Cepeda says, "Today was another great team win — Redlands upped their game at various moments, and everyone did a good job supporting one another across the courts and re-focusing on their game plans to pull ahead."
In doubles the Ephs started out strong, winning all three matches. Number two team
Jane Ladaga and Ananya Aggarwal played a close match. Momentum swung back and forth, but thanks to Ladaga's aggressive net game in the close points, they asserted their win in the tiebreak. Number one doubles
Katherine Orgielewicz and Yuu Ishikawa were challenged by their Bulldog opponents, fighting to take the lead. They finally broke through at a critical deuce point and won 2 straight games, giving them the confidence boost they needed to sail through the rest of the match. Once number two team
Mia Thomann and Maya Jamroz utilized the net and Jamroz' serve as weapons to win their match 8-5.
With a 3-0 lead and playing to decision (first to 5 match wins), the Ephs started their singles matches with a lot of confidence. Out of the gate, number five player and freshman Ladaga stormed through her opponent dropping only one game to win 6-1, 6-0. Ladaga stayed consistent in her match and waited for the perfect opportunities to attack the ball and make her opponent comfortable. With four match wins and all other players leading their matches, the Ephs inched closer to a win.
Jamroz had also gained a lead with a first set win and was up 4-1. She was also very close to clinching for the Ephs, but Ananya beat her to it. Jamroz stayed positive throughout the match and remained headstrong to secure the early lead. Ultimately, number four player Aggarwal raced towards the finish line after winning the first set 6-0. At 5-2 in the second set, a rain delay broke some momentum, but Aggarwal still managed a 6-2 second set and clinched the match for the Ephs.
Cepeda adds, "It was clutch to have the 3-0 sweep headed into singles. Big shoutout to the squad for their coachability and patience. We're looking forward to battling Pomona tomorrow." The Ephs face Pomona-Pitzer tomorrow at 3pm.
