WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – The Williams women's golf team soared to the lead on a chilly and rainy day. On the first round of the Williams Fall Invitational, hosted at Taconic Golf Club, the Williams Purple team shot a 293 (+9) to take an eight shot lead over Pomona-Pitzer. On the individual side, junior
Gio Kim had her college career-lowest round, shooting a 68 (-3), placing herself atop the leader board.
For the Williams Purple team, G. Kim led the lineup with her score, making 5 birdies on the day, including back-to-back birdies on 11 and 12, as well as 15 and 16. Following her was sophomore
Jackie Lu, with a strong 73 (+2). Sophomore
Euna Lee and senior
Tianyi Zhuang came in with a pair of 76s (+5). While Zhuang made key up-and-downs to keep her score low, Lee made a clutch birdie on the par-5 10
th by sticking it to a few inches. First-year
Emma Abramson was next with a 77 (+6). Abramson battled back with birdies on her last holes of the day: the par-5 1
st and the par-5 18
th.
The Williams Gold team shot a 320 (+36). Leading that lineup was first-year
Maryanne Grace with a stellar 74 (+3). Grace made many great par saves to keep her score in the low 70s. Next was sophomore
Victoria Kim with a 78 (+7). Even with the tough 17
th hole adding to her score, V. Kim kept her ground the entire round, allowing her to post a solid score. Following was senior
Aishvarya Bedi, shooting an 82 (+11). While a couple big numbers led to a higher score, Bedi stayed strong, with a solid biride on the par-5 10
th. Rounding out the Gold team was first-year
Natalie Cheong, with an 86 (+15). Even through the difficult conditions, Cheong kept her attitude high.
G. Kim remarks, "I felt really good on the course today especially with my putting and I'm super glad to post a good score for our team. I hope we can carry this energy into tomorrow!"
