Men's Crew Competes at Head of the Charles Regatta

Cambridge, Massachusetts – This Sunday, Men's Crew traveled to the Boston area to close out their fall season at the world-famous Head of the Charles Regatta. It was a great day for racing – the venue featured classic Charles conditions like sunny weather, crowded waterways, and moderate winds. The Ephs saw success across all of their boats, and were cheered on by a huge crowd of alumni and parents that came to watch this special event!

The first event of the day for Williams was the Collegiate Eight, which was packed with DI competition and NESCAC rivals in a 42 boat field. The Ephs had their first and second eights entered in the event, and both crews put down strong races. The first eight finished 7th, going 14:57.559, and the second eight finished 19th with a time of 15:20.974. LaSalle won the event, putting down an impressive 14:33.565.

First eight stroke seat Noah Phipps '25 was pleased with how his crew raced, commenting: "I was proud of how my boat rowed today. We were aggressive all the way down the course, and I felt like we finished the fall having made great progress while also being excited to find more speed over the winter." Second eight stroke seat Myer Liebman '26 had similar feelings, saying: "The 2V put down a very solid piece today that qualified the boat for next year. It is always super fun to race at the Charles, and we are looking forward to spring racing in a couple of months!"

The second and final race of the day for Williams was the Collegiate Four event, which also had 42 crews and featured lots of DI and NESCAC opponents. The Ephs had a solid piece, going 17:38.311 and placing 25th. San Diego won the event with a time of 16:15.540. 2 seat Blaz Vavpetic '27 had this to say about the race: "Overall I thought we had a strong row. We attacked it from the start, we created a race plan that we executed, and Ellia gave us a great line through the Charles' notorious turns. Although we had a bit of an oar clash with another boat during our sprint, we stayed sharp and composed throughout the race."

Eph head coach Marc Mandel reflected on the day, saying: "First off, congrats to LaSalle University on a dominant win today.  We definitely went into the race with the highest of aspirations given how our team has embraced our training this fall and the way the boats have been moving in practice.  While we slipped a few places with our finish relative to the past two years, we easily head into the off-season in a better place in terms of fitness, mindset and comfort in the boats."

With the season's racing over, the Ephs will take the next couple weeks to wind down water practice and prepare for winter training. A big thanks is owed to all of the parents and alumni who showed up to cheer on the purple and gold this weekend!
