Cortland, N.Y --
The women's golf team came out of the Martin and Wallace Inivtational, hosted by SUNY Cortland, as champions. After a cancellation of the first round due to severe weather, the Ephs persevered in the shortened 18-hole tournament format. The course was still extremely wet and rainy from the day before, but that did not stop the golf team from posting some low scores. Shooting a team total of 297, +9, the team beat Amherst by five shots to secure the win. On the individual side, Nalinda Wanikpun was crowned the winner for the weekend, shooting the day's only under par round at 71, -1.
Leading the team lineup was first-year
Emma Abramson with a solid 73, +1. Abramson carded 4 birdies for her round, which undoubtedly helped her shoot a low score. Following Abramson was sophomore
Victoria Kim, shooting a 74, +2. Junior
Gio Kim and sophomore
Euna Lee came in with a pair of 75s, +3. Rounding out the team lineup was senior
Tianyi Zhuang with a 76, +4. On the individual side, first-year
Natalie Cheong was not far behind, shooting a 77, +5. While course conditions were not ideal, the team took advantage of the short yardages to shoot some solid scores.Â
Abramson comments, "I think this past weekend was an overall solid tournament for the team. It was exciting to play on a scoreable course that rewarded good golf shots and to be able to go after pins. Â Although we were only able to play 18, putting together a strong team score is good for our mentality going into our final regular tournament of the season at Amherst."
Head Coach
Tomas Adalsteinsson adds, "This was a great team win! Our players did an excellent job managing themselves and the course. We didn't make that many birdies, but we also minimized damage. It resulted in a strong team performance. We continue to see progress, and on Tuesday we'll get right back to preparing for our next event."
The Ephs compete next weekend at the Amherst Invitational, hosted at The Orchards GC, on April 20th to 21st. This will be their final regular season event before the NESCAC Championships, hosted at Taconic Golf Club on May 4th and 5th. Go Ephs!
