Ephs Fall on Day 2 of the NCAA Individual Championships

St. Louis, MO- Day 2 at the NCAA individual championships brought a whirlwind of emotions for the Ephs. It was a day filled with highs, lows, and everything in between, with Erica Ekstrand and Yuu Ishikawa bringing their trademark resilience and sportsmanship.

Ekstrand kicked off her day with a bang, facing off against a tough opponent from Claremont Mudd Scripps in the Elite 8. The match started off in Ekstrand's favor, with a solid 6-3 win in the first set. But as the game progressed, her opponent adapted, throwing Ekstrand off her game. Down 0-5 in the second set, Ekstrand dug deep, saving six set points in a heart-stopping comeback to snatch the set 7-6(2). The victory was sweet, but the journey wasn't over yet. In the Final 4, Ekstrand faced her biggest challenge yet, the formidable #1 seed from the University of Chicago. Though she stumbled in the first set with a 1-6 loss, Ekstrand fought tooth and nail in the second set, trading blows until the bitter end, ultimately falling short in a tiebreaker 6-7(3). Despite the loss, Ekstrand's courage and determination shone bright, a beacon of inspiration for both her team and supporters.

In doubles, Ishikawa and Ekstrand took on a seasoned pair from Babson. Despite their best efforts, they fell 2-6, 0-6 in the Elite 8. Yet, amidst the disappointment, there was a sense of camaraderie and pride in their partnership, a reminder that victories aren't always measured in wins and losses, but in the relationships formed through shared experiences and mutual support.

As the sun set on Day 2, the Ephs may not have achieved all they had hoped for, but their journey was one filled with courage, determination, and a whole lot of heart. The Ephs will take the summer to reset and come back even stronger next fall.
