BRUNSWICK, ME -- The Williams Women's Golf team came out firing on day one of the Polar Bear Shootout, hosted by Bowdoin College. Sunny skies and firm fairways set up for some good scoring conditions in the afternoon. After shooting 289 (-3) the Ephs sit in first, 11 strokes ahead of Wellesley. The team was led by sophomore Natalie Cheong who carded 5 birdies and 13 pars for a course record 68 (-5). Cheong's confidence on the greens and strong mentality allowed her to go low.
Cheong comments, "Just tried to stay as much in the present as I could today and to keep calm throughout my shots. Took advantage of the shorter par 5's and convinced myself to have confidence even when I wasn't feeling it."
Following the 68, was sophomore Maryanne Grace who also carded 5 birdies leading to an outstanding 71 (-2). Close behind was senior captain
Gio Kim and junior
Euna Lee who both shot 75 (+2). First-year
Michelle Ding made her college debut with a 78 (+5), highlighted by finishing 2 under in her last 5 holes. Rounding out the lineup was sophomore
Emma Abramson who finished with an 81 (+8).
Assistant coach Bill Kangas filling in for head coach Tomas Adalsteinsson who is on sabbatical, noted, "The team did a great job today. Natalie had an outstanding day, recording a course record 68, and helping our team lead the Bowdoin Invitational after Day 1. Everyone contributed today and while we appreciate what we accomplished, we all know how important it is to be at our best on Sunday. Traditionally, Sunday has been known to us as our "Moooving Day", and we are all excited for the opportunity to play and to keep improving together as a team."
The final round of the Polar Bear Shootout begins at 9am tomorrow. Follow along on Clippd for live scoring to cheer on the Ephs!
