WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - Senior captain Oscar Newman and sophomore Vincent VanMaaren will represent the Williams College men's indoor track & field team during the 400-meter dash and pole vault events, respectively, at the 2025 NCAA Division III Indoor Championship Friday and Saturday at Nazareth University's Golisano Training Center in Rochester, New York.

Ethan Barron"Without a doubt, it has been one of the toughest years to be a Williams track & field student-athlete," said head coach Ethan Barron. "Many student-athletes have battled through so much adversity to put up some great performances and come together as a team. For Vincent and Oscar to do what they have done and advance to nationals speaks volumes about their competitiveness, dedication and passion. I could not be more excited for them to put an exclamation point on this indoor season for the entire team. In so many ways, they epitomize Williams track & field."

Newman makes his fourth appearance at nationals and first in an individual event, as he competed in the 4x400-meter relay during the 2022 Indoor, 2023 Indoor and 2024 Outdoor Championships. He earned All-American First Team laurels in the 2024 Outdoor Championships, as his relay team finished eighth overall in the finals.

The Celebration, Florida, native earned NESCAC All-Conference honors in the 4x400 relay (NESCAC meet record: 3:16.15) and 400 meters (48.41) in 2024, as he placed first and second overall, respectively, during the events at the conference championship. In 2023, he took home All-Conference recognition in the 4x100 relay (NESCAC meet record: 41.47) and 400 meters (personal record: 48.26), as he finished first and second overall, respectively, during the events at the conference meet.

Newman's best indoor time at the college level in the 400 meters occurred during the 2024 BU David Hemery Valentine Invitational on Feb. 10, 2024, as he clocked a time of 48.32. He recently placed first overall in the finals of the 400 meters (48.79) during the Tufts Final Qualifier on March 8 in Medford, Massachusetts.

"I am excited to have the opportunity to go to nationals and compete against some of the best sprinters in the country," said Newman. "Personally, qualifying individually for nationals is something that I have been working toward for the past three-and-a-half years and I am grateful that this is my year. In many ways, getting to nationals is the hard part and I cannot wait to leave it all out there on the track in what will be my last indoor meet. This would not be possible without the great group of fellow student-athletes, coaches and athletic trainers I have around me, whether they are in my training group or not. The support and energy that the entire team has brought over the past three months has been incredible."

VanMaaren makes his first appearance on the national stage, as he has placed first overall during the finals of the pole vault five times in his year-and-a-half Ephs' career. The Delhi, New York, native placed first in the finals of the pole vault with a college-best performance of 4.94 meters at the 2025 Division III New England Championship on Feb. 28-March 1 in Boston, Massachusetts. During the 2024 NESCAC Championship, he finished in a tie for third during the final of the pole vault with a personal outdoor record of 4.55.

"I need to be focused and confident on the day of competition," said VanMaaren. "I need to treat every bar like a third attempt."
