POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Sophomore Kate Tuttle and junior Morgan Eigel led as five Ephs finished in the top 10, helping the Williams College women's cross country team win the Vassar Ron Stonitsch Invitational on Saturday morning.
Tuttle and Eigel were the only runners finishing under 19 minutes in the 5-kilometer race at the Vassar Farm, and ended the race in a virtual tie, with the sophomore taking first place by just three-tenths of a second in 18:56.4.
Sophomore Hannah Prokup (6th overall, 19:09), junior Julia Brennan (8th, 19:13), and sophomore Clara Gahm (9th, 19:15) rounded out the top five for the Ephs, with junior Hayley Ballard (11th, 19:24) and senior captain Fiona Picone (12th, 19:29) closing out the points-earning positions.
"Clara played a key role in helping set up our women's pack early in the race," said head coach Dusty Lopez. "We worked on a more controlled race strategy today compared to last weekend and overall it worked out well."
Williams ran a total of 12 student-athletes in the race, and the team score of 26 outpaced the hosts from Vassar (44) and Liberty League power RPI (79).
The team will return to action next Saturday for the Purple Valley Classic and Pete Farwell Alumni Race, held at Mount Greylock Regional School in Williamstown, Massachusetts. This is the Ephs' only home meet of the season.
