PHOENIX, AZ. -- The Williams College baseball team got its 2008
season off to a great start Monday as the Ephs posted 11-2 and 5-4
victories over Albertus Magnus College at South Mountain Community
College.
The Ephs took the nightcap of the doubleheader, 5-4, in eight
innings, after rallying from a 4-2 deficit. Williams scored twice
in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game. First-year Pat Barren
got things started with, a one-out triple and Max Pinto drew a
pinch-hit walk. Pinto stole second, and a wild pitch brought home
Barren and moved Pinto to third. First-year Tom Tysse then lined an
RBI-single to tie the game.
Williams won it in the eighth. With two outs and nobody on,
first-year James Allison reached on a two-base error. Junior Zach
Stone followed with a grounder that was also misplayed, allowing
Allison to score the winning run.
The rally made a winner of sophomore Tom Coleman (1-0). The
right-hander hurled three innings of one-hit, shutout relief,
striking out two and not walking a batter. First-year Dan
Marcet got the start for the Ephs, and he also threw three shutout
innings, allowing one hit and walking two while fanning one.
Barren led the hit parade for the Ephs, going 3 for 4 with a
triple. Robin Allemand was 2 for 5 with a triple, James Allison was
2 for 5, and Tysse was 1 for 2.
The Ephs banged out 13 hits in the opener and junior hurler Dan
Benz carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning in the 11-2 win.
Benz (1-0) finished with a complete-game three-hitter. The southpaw
walked three and struck out eight in then an victory.
Williams scored twice in the first and never looked back.
Allemand led off and reached on an error. James DiCosmo lined an
RBI-single, stole second and scored on Taylor Mikell's RBI-single.
Mikell finished the game 3 for 4 with one RBI and two runs
scored. Allemand was 3 for 5 with two triples, two RBI and three
runs scored. DiCosmo went 2 for 5 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Senior Kevin Flynn was 2 for 4 with two RBI and a run scored.
Williams plays Brockport State Tuesday at 11 a.m. MST.
