CHANDLER, AZ. -- Junior southpaw Dan Benz tossed seven solid
innings Friday and his teammates backed him with a 10-hit attack as
the Williams College baseball team took its conference opener over
rival Middlebury, 10-4, at Snedigar Park.
The Ephs improved to 10-4 overall. They play a key doubleheader
with the same Panthers Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. (MST).
Benz improved to 2-0 after allowing only five Middlebury hits
over seven innings. He walked just one and struck out seven. One of
the two runs charged to Benz was unearned.
Williams gave its ace a three-run lead in the top of the first.
Robin Allemand led off with a single against Panther starter Jack
Britton. James DiCosmo sacrificed Allemand to second, and Max Pinto
flew out to center.
With two outs, Taylor Mikell reached on an error that allowed
Allemand to score. Chad Brown drew a walk, and Al Mathews stroked a
two-run, opposite-field double to left-center for a 3-0 lead.
Benz held the Panthers at bay, and Williams held a 4-1 lead
entering the top of the seventh when the Ephs exploded for six
runs. Barrett Allison led off the frame with a double, and Britton
plunked Allemand with a pitch on an 0-2 count.
DiCosmo followed with a single back up the box, and Pinto drew a
walk. Mikell walked to force home the sixth run. Brown then
followed with a two-run double. Mathews line an RBI-single and,
with two outs, first-year Pat Barren had an RBI-single that made it
10-1.
Mathews finished 2 for 3 with three RBI, while DiCosmo was 2 for
4.
