CHANDLER, AZ. - Senior Max Pinto went 5 for 6 in two games
Saturday to help his Williams College baseball team to a key 8-3,
11-10 sweep of division rival Middlebury at Snedigar Park.
The Ephs wrap up their Arizona trip 12-4 overall, 3-0 in
conference play. The Ephs open the northern part of their schedule
Thursday at 4:15 p.m. at home against Elms College.
In Saturday's opener, junior lefty Ben Horwitz stifled the
Panther bats for six innings, allowing just five hits and three
runs, two earned, while walking three and striking out a
career-high 11 batters. He earned the victory.
At the plate, Robin Allemand led off the game with a solo home
run.
"That was a big hit," Eph senior James DiCosmo said. "It really
set the tone for the whole day."
Tied at one after one, the Ephs scored twice in the second,
third and fourth innings to build a 7-1 lead and not look back. In
the second, first-year Pat Barren drew a walk and Al mathews
singled. With two outs, both runners advanced to second and third
and Barren scored when Allemand's grounder was booted for an error.
DiCosmo followed with an RBI-single.
In the third, Taylor Mikell single and Barren lashed out an
RBI-triple. Mathews scored Barren with a groundout.
Pinto was 2 for 2 in the contest, Mathews 3 for 4 with two RBI
and a solo home run in the fifth inning, and Allemand and Barren
were both 2 for 3.
In the nightcap, Williams erupted for six runs in the top of the
first and, once Middlebury fought back to within 6-4, erupted for
five more in the top of the fourth.
Allemand got things going in the first again with a single and a
stolen base. After a lineout, Pinto singled to center to score
Allemand. Mikell drew a walk and Chad Brown delivered an
RBI-single. Mathews walked and Barren capped the frame with a
three-run trip to the gap in right-center field.
In the fourth, a little two-out magic delivered five runs.
Barrett Allison, Allemand and DiCosmo all drew walks to load the
bases. Pinto delivered a two-run single. Mikell was intentionally
walked, and Brown lashed out a two-run safety. Mathews capped the
inning with his own RBI-single for an 11-4 lead.
Senior Matt Gustafson started for Williams and picked up the
win, allowing nine hits and two walks over five innings. All five
runs charged to the righty were unearned. First-year Tom Hester
squelched a Middlebury rally by getting the final out in the
eighth, then threw a scoreless ninth to record the save. He allowed
one hit and one walk while striking out one over 1 1/3 innings.
