CASTLETON, VT- The Williams College baseball team (14-9,
3-2) snapped a four game losing streak with a 10-9 victory against
Castleton State (9-14) on Thursday afternoon. The win, only
the Ephs second since returning from Arizona, comes one day before
a crucial three game series against NESCAC rival Hamilton.
"It's nice to get a one-run win after four consecutive one-run
losses," said head coach Bill Barrale. "This is a nice
springboard right into league play this weekend."
For the Ephs, first year Wilson Barr got the start and went six
strong innings allowing three earned runs and striking out
four. After spending a lot of time in the two spot, senior
second baseman James DiCosmo shined in his return to the leadoff
spot. DiCosmo batted 4-5 with two runs and a clutch 2 RBI
single.
The Ephs saw an 8-1 lead shrink to 8-5 entering the eighth, but
DiCosmo came up big and plated two runs to make it a 10-5
advantage.
Those runs would be crucial as first year Dan Marcet struggled
in his third inning of work, as the Spartans scored four runs to
cut the lead to one. Looking to avoid another late inning
defeat, the Ephs called on sophomore Paul Burgdorf to save the
victory. Burgdorf came in and allowed a double before
retiring the final three batters in order to pick up the save.
Rounding out the top performances for the Ephs were senior
centerfielder Max Pinto, who went 2-5 with a run and an RBI, and
junior third baseman Barrett Alison, who went 1-3 with two runs.
The Ephs begin a three game conference series against Hamilton
at home, starting tomorrow at 4 PM. The Ephs currently sit in
second place in the NESCAC West.
