WILLIAMSTOWN, MA- After
going 1-4 in consecutive one run games, the Williams College
baseball team (15-9, 4-2) made sure there would be no such anxiety
Friday afternoon with a 9-2 conference victory over
Hamilton. The win marks the Ephs second
consecutive victory, and first conference win since a three game
sweep of Middlebury in Arizona.
"This was a nice team win for us," said head
coach Bill Barrale. "We played good defense, got
a great pitching performance, and swung the bats very well."
That great pitching performance was turned in
by senior Matt Gustafson, who pitched eight solid innings allowing
no earned runs while striking out five.
After Hamilton jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead,
the Ephs offense responded in a big way. In the
second, the Ephs put up four runs with two outs, including an RBI
single by junior designated hitter Taylor Mikell and a three-run
homerun by senior centerfielder Max Pinto, to go up 4-1.
In the sixth, the Ephs put the game out of
reach with a two-run triple by sophomore shortstop Robin Allemand
and a sacrifice fly by sophomore right fielder Al
Matthews. In the seventh, the Ephs would add
another run with a bases loaded walk and take a 9-2 lead.
In the ninth, sophomore reliever Tom Coleman
pitched a scoreless frame to seal the victory and give the Ephs a
much needed conference victory.
Rounding out the stats for the Ephs were
senior second baseman James DiCosmo, who continued to excel in the
leadoff spot going 2-3 with 3 runs and 3 walks, and senior left
fielder Kevin Flynn who went 2-4 with a run and a walk.
The Ephs continue their series with Hamilton
tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at 12 PM.
