WILLIAMSTOWN, MA- The
Williams College baseball team (17-9, 6-2) finished off a
conference sweep of Hamilton Saturday afternoon by winning 9-4 and
9-8. The wins mark the Ephs second conference
sweep this season and put them in the drivers seat with four NESCAC
games remaining.
In the first game, the Ephs threw ace junior
Dan Benz, who pitched six strong innings allowing two earned runs
while striking out nine. For the Ephs, the
offense got a spark from senior Trey Pendery, who went 1-1 with a
two run homer and a sacrifice fly. The sophomore
catchers also got in on the action as Chad Brown went 2-3 and Ryan
Webster went 2-3 with 2 RBI.
"In the first game we faced their best pitcher
(sophomore Max Foster) and we had a big day swinging the bats,"
said head coach Bill Barrale. "Dan Benz was
outstanding and pitched a great game."
The final game of the series did not start off
as well for the Ephs as the first two had.
Junior Ben Horowitz got the start and struggled through five
innings, while not getting much help from his
defense. On the day the lefty allowed six runs
(one earned) and only recorded two strikeouts.
Early on, the Ephs trailed 6-1 before rallying
to go up two runs. However, holding the lead was
once again a problem as the Continentals were able to tie the game
in the ninth off of first year reliever Tommy Hester before junior
Zach Stone shut the door on the Hamilton rally.
Tied at nine entering the bottom of the ninth, the Ephs looked to
avoid extra innings.
With one out, sophomore right fielder Al
Matthews hit a clutch triple, and eventually scored the winning run
on a Chad Brown single to center.
Rounding out the stats for the Ephs in the
second game were senior second baseman James DiCosmo who went 4-5
with two runs and an RBI, and sophomore reliever Tom Coleman who
pitched two scoreless innings while only allowing a single hit.
After the weekend, the Ephs now control their
own destiny in terms of making the NESCAC
tournament. With a three game series against
Little 3 rival Wesleyan and a make up game against Amherst, the
Ephs could claim the top spot in the NESCAC West if they win out.
The Ephs now look to continue their four game
winning streak against non-conference opponent Skidmore at home
Tuesday April 22 at 4 PM.
